PCR Specimen Collection Guidelines
There are multiple collection devices that can be used for COVID-19 PCR testing. Atlanta Medical Testing Services' preferred devices are the Nasopharyngeal and/or Oropharyngeal swab collected in a multi microbe media (M4) VCM, medium (green-cap) tube or equivalent (UTM). Symptoms of influenza A and B, SARS-CoV-2, and multiple other respiratory pathogen infections overlap with one another, making it difficult to differentially diagnose the source of a patient’s symptoms. Patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 can have another viral (such as influenza), bacterial, or fungal infection at the same time. During widespread co-circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza, clinicians should consider testing patients with compatible symptoms for both viruses. Providers must submit two specimens when co-testing for SARS-CoV-2 and another respiratory infection, such as influenza.
